“May we humanize faster than they can militarize.”
Protest is holy. Rejecting authoritarianism and inflammatory cruelty is holy. Protecting the oppressed is holy. Welcoming the immigrant is holy. Opposing the processes of corrupt, white supremacist deportation is holy. Insisting justice and accountability is holy. We are all sacred Godseeds.
Each human life contains a universe of story and soul. Remember your heart and act accordingly; our freedom is all intertwined and on the line. Notice when you are being fed propaganda meant to kindle an illegitimate enemy. When they show you photos of burning self driving cars, remind them that no property could ever amount to a sliver of the worth and necessity of human dignity and human rights. May we pray for and encourage peaceful protest so that the most vulnerable are not subject to further violence when the administration uses righteous protest as excuse for escalation. May we pray for discernment and precision for those on the streets. May we say to each other again and again: I refuse to dehumanize anybody, and I will not fall for their tactic to polarize us further. What are your gifts, how might you use them as participatory prayer and intentional spell- weaving for those who need it acutely right now?
Los Angeles, you floodplain of dreams, you complicated congested circulatory system of creation: you are holding it down and fighting the good fight. I would expect nothing less from the looming, wild city two hours to the north.
I also recommend watching this Hank Green video, if you want fifteen minutes of well articulated fury (I don’t agree with him on everything! But a lot of it I do!).
MAY WE BELIEVE IN AND CREATE A WORLD WITHOUT INHUMANE COLONIAL BORDERS.
*Obviously you’re not descended from immigrants if you yourself are the immigrant traveler and person to make new home in a place. And obviously if your ancestors were forcibly brought here as slaves, “immigrant” is not a term that would be the most accurate. And obviously many many Indigenous people in North America are also descended from immigrants from all over the world, indigeneity is not a puritanical monolith, but for the sake of making a clear point to cut through the anti-immigrant bullshit, sometimes you gotta say something a bit simplified. Nobody is illegal on stolen land, as they say.
